Dialogue In The Underworld
a film by Daniel Coche, 94'A fictional summit meeting between Machiavelli and Montesquieu... Which of the two thinkers was right about man and the possible good society? An unexpected answer, in a joust that is more topical than ever.
Published in 1864, "Le Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu" (The Dialogue in the Underworld between Machiavelli and Montesquieu) by Maurice Joly is a pamphlet against the Second Empire, which was seen as a fraudulent misappropriation of the ideals of the Enlightenment. This work was banned and pilloried. The meeting in the realm of the dead of these two historical figures of political thought questions the validity of our modernity.
